Designing for People, Not Just Problems
The first time I realized technology could exclude as easily as it could empower was on a late bus ride home after a lab session. A new “smart” ticketing system had replaced the familiar paper passes. The scanner glowed a sterile blue, demanding precise timing and a steady hand. A woman beside me—older, carrying two grocery bags—tried three times. The machine beeped its rejection like a verdict. The driver sighed. The line behind us tightened. I watched her cheeks flush as she stepped aside, suddenly made invisible by a system allegedly built for “everyone.”
That night, I kept thinking: if engineering is meant to solve problems, why did this solution create a new kind of humiliation?
A Milan Map and a Question I Couldn’t Ignore
When I later read about the Gender-Responsive Research and Innovation Lab in STEM 2026, led by Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with TU Berlin, RWTH Aachen, TU Delft, and NTNU, the program felt less like an extracurricular and more like a reply to that bus ride. The Lab isn’t centered on “adding women” to a poster or sprinkling inclusion into a slide deck. It aims for something harder: integrating gender, diversity, and intersectionality into the actual bones of technology design—especially in mobility, artificial intelligence, and sustainability.
The structure itself is a kind of promise. A pre-lab online phase (April–June 2026) with the ENHANCE MOOC “Responsible Innovators of Tomorrow” and seminars on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Diversity Aware Design. Then a five-day summer school in Milan (September 7th–11th, 2026), where teams turn principles into prototypes, debates into decisions. A certificate. 4 ECTS. Concrete value for work that too often gets treated as optional.
But what pulled me in wasn’t the credential. It was the insistence that “ethical innovation” is not a side quest—it is the main engineering task.
When “Neutral” Technology Isn’t Neutral
My complication, if I’m honest, is that I used to believe good math guaranteed good outcomes. I’ve built models where fairness was a line item, not a foundation. In group projects, we optimized accuracy and speed, celebrating small efficiency victories while ignoring the quieter question: who gets left behind when we optimize?
Then I began noticing patterns. Navigation apps that assume everyone can drive. AI systems trained on datasets that treat certain accents as errors. Sustainability plans that overlook the realities of immigrants—people learning new cities, new systems, new bureaucracies, often with limited power to choose “green” options. The more I learned, the more “neutral” felt like a convenient myth.
Learning to Build with Others in Mind
The Lab’s focus on international, interdisciplinary teamwork is exactly the discomfort I need. I imagine the online seminars as more than Zoom rectangles—I imagine them as mirrors. Someone in my group will notice a bias I normalized. Another will have lived experience navigating public services with a second language. Someone else may challenge the way I define “user.”
In Milan, I picture the worktables cluttered with sticky notes and half-formed ideas, the kind that look messy because they’re honest. We would map stakeholders, name tradeoffs, and ask the questions engineers sometimes avoid: What harms might this design produce? What assumptions does it make about bodies, time, safety, family roles, or legal status?
The Lab’s goals—embedding gender and diversity into design, crafting socially responsive strategies, and reflecting critically on impact—feel like a blueprint for becoming the type of innovator I want to be: one who doesn’t confuse elegance with justice.
A Different Definition of Success
My resolution isn’t a grand invention. It’s a shift in how I measure whether something “works.” If a mobility tool saves minutes but increases shame, it fails. If an AI system improves averages but deepens inequality at the margins, it fails. I want to learn how to design so that the woman with the grocery bags isn’t treated as an exception to accommodate later—but as part of the audience from the beginning.
I’m applying because I want my future work in STEM to hold up in the real world, where people are complex, identities overlap, and innovation carries consequences. The Lab offers a place to practice that responsibility—before my designs leave the classroom and start shaping someone else’s life.
