A bold new chapter in human spaceflight: NASA’s Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar flight since Apollo, preparing to lift off from Kennedy Space Center and send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon aboard the Orion spacecraft.

NASA engineers, flight controllers, and astronauts have been turning Artemis II from a plan into hardware—building confidence in the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, validating spacecraft systems, and refining countdown procedures. The mission’s purpose is clear and intensely practical: orbit the Moon without landing, and test the systems needed for future Artemis lunar-surface missions—and eventually, Mars.

The timeline crystallized into a near-term reality: Artemis II targets an April 1, 2026 launch. A primary launch opportunity is set for 6:24 p.m. EDT (2224 UTC) on April 1, with a backup window on April 2 at 7:22 p.m. EDT. As of March 31, 2026, final readiness work continues, including weather checks and crew preparations, while teams press toward the last operational “go/no-go” decisions.

The mission entered its most visible and high-stakes phase: the rocket’s move to the pad. Rocket rollout to Launch Pad 39B began March 19, and the flight readiness review has been completed, confirming a go-ahead to proceed toward launch operations. These steps aren’t ceremonial—they are engineering gates meant to catch the smallest risk before it becomes a mission-ending problem.

Artemis II is also carrying science designed to help humans live and work farther from Earth. The AVATAR experiment will fly organ-on-a-chip devices built using astronauts’ cells, studying how deep space radiation and microgravity affect human health. The aim is twofold: strengthen biomedical protections for long-duration space travel and generate insights that could translate into Earth-based medicine.

It is an engineering and applied science milestone that reconnects human spaceflight with the lunar neighborhood, proving out the spacecraft, the rocket, and the science needed for what comes next. If Artemis II performs as planned—looping around the Moon and returning safely—it doesn’t just mark the first crewed lunar flight since Apollo. It becomes the bridge between past footprints and future missions: back to the Moon, and onward toward Mars.
