A planet that had learned to live within a delicate energy balance: sunlight arriving, heat leaving, seasons returning on time. Scientists watched that balance like a vital sign — stable enough to sustain oceans, forests, farms, and the rhythms of everyday life.

Researchers measured the atmosphere’s most influential heat-trapping gases — carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) — at monitoring stations around the world. Those numbers helped tell a story about how much extra heat the Earth was being asked to hold onto.
Until one day,
On March 23, 2026, the UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issued a stark warning of a record “climate imbalance” — a signal that planetary warming is accelerating.
At the center of the update were the gases that quietly shape the planet’s thermostat.
Because of that,
The WMO reported that atmospheric concentrations of three key greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide — reached record levels in 2024, the latest year with consolidated global figures.
And it wasn’t just another incremental rise.
It was, in the WMO’s words, the “single-largest year-on-year increase” on record.
That kind of jump matters because these gases don’t simply mark a trend — they actively change how much heat Earth retains, increasing the odds of more extreme heat, heavier downpours, deeper droughts and more volatile climate patterns.
Because of that,
WMO scientific officer John Kennedy added another unsettling detail: the story didn’t stop at 2024.
He said that “data from individual sites around the world indicates that levels of these greenhouse gases continue to increase in 2025”, and that this ongoing rise continues to modify “the energy balance of the planet.”
In plain terms: the atmosphere is still accumulating the ingredients that trap more heat — and the planet is responding.
This builds on a growing body of research pointing to faster warming since 2015, including findings reported by the Potsdam Institute, reinforcing the idea that we’re not watching a slow, linear climb — we’re watching a system being pushed into a more unstable state.
Ever since then,
The climate story has become less about distant thresholds and more about live diagnostics: new records, faster shifts, and mounting evidence that the planet’s heat ledger is moving further and further out of balance.
And if greenhouse gases are still rising — as the WMO’s site data suggest for 2025 — then the next chapter won’t be written by predictions alone, but by measurements arriving in near real time, confirming that the “climate imbalance” is no longer a warning about the future. It’s a description of the present.
