Learning to See the Whole Lab
I used to think the hardest part of STEM was the math. That if I could just transform confusion into clean equations, I’d earn my place at the table. But in my first semester working in a campus lab—fluorescent lights humming above benches cluttered with pipettes, tangled cables, and half-erased whiteboards—I realized the real difficulty wasn’t solving problems. It was deciding who gets to solve them.
A Room Full of Talent—And Quiet
Our team meetings happened in a narrow seminar room that always smelled faintly of dry-erase markers and coffee. The same voices filled the space each week—confident, fast, and familiar with the unspoken rhythm of academic debate. I was new, and so was Lina, a visiting student who had recently moved to the Netherlands. She had an engineer’s precision, the kind that makes you trust someone instantly when they say, “Let’s check the data again.”
Yet when ideas bounced around the room, Lina’s stayed close to her notebook.
At first I assumed it was just personality. Then I noticed patterns: the way a suggestion offered with hesitation got ignored, only to be praised when repeated by someone else; the way jokes landed differently depending on who delivered them; the way “We’re open to everyone” could coexist with a room that didn’t always feel open at all.
The Moment I Didn’t Speak Up
The complication arrived quietly, the way exclusion often does—not as a slammed door, but as a door that never quite opens.
During a meeting about cleaning a messy dataset, Lina pointed out an error in our preprocessing script. Her voice was soft, careful. The lead student nodded without looking up and kept talking. Ten minutes later, another teammate spotted the same issue and was met with immediate approval: “Exactly—that’s the bug!”
Lina’s shoulders tightened, then loosened as if she’d practiced letting things go.
I felt heat climb my neck. I knew what had happened, and I did nothing. On my walk back across campus, wind pushing against my jacket, I couldn’t stop hearing her careful sentence disappear into the air.
Learning the Language of Inclusion
A week later, I came across a summary of a plenary session titled “Empowering diversity in practice” from NWO’s Insight Out 2026, focused on “what a diverse and inclusive university might look like” and how to build it in real life—not just in mission statements. The phrasing struck me because it didn’t treat inclusion as a side quest; it treated it as infrastructure.
I started reading more widely about STEM policy discussions and inclusion work happening across the UK and Europe. One policy round-up described how equity efforts in STEM are increasingly tied to practical levers—education pathways, recruitment, retention, and workplace culture—rather than inspirational slogans alone. That mattered to me. It meant I wasn’t overreacting to one awkward meeting; I was noticing a systemic problem that others were actively trying to solve.
Choosing to Practice What I Believe
At the next meeting, I came prepared in a different way—not with extra code, but with attention.
When Lina began to speak and the conversation started to slide past her, I interrupted myself instead of her. “Sorry—can we go back? Lina just flagged an important issue with the preprocessing step. Lina, can you walk us through it again?”
The room shifted. Not dramatically. No one applauded. But the pace slowed, eyes lifted, and Lina’s explanation landed with the weight it deserved. Afterward, she smiled—not brightly, but with relief. The kind that says, I didn’t imagine it. Someone saw it.
Small actions didn’t fix everything, but they changed my sense of responsibility. Inclusion wasn’t only the job of administrators or policy documents. It was also the job of the person sitting next to you when a voice gets lost.
The Kind of Engineer I Want to Become
I’m applying to college because I want deeper technical training, yes—but also because I want to work in environments where STEM is strengthened by who gets included, not weakened by who gets filtered out. I’ve learned that building a better model or designing a cleaner system is inseparable from building a better culture around it.
Now, when I picture my future in STEM, I don’t just see the lab equipment and the elegant solutions. I see the meeting room too—the pauses, the listening, the credit given where it’s due. And I’ve started to understand a new version of rigor: not only accuracy in data, but fairness in whose data-driven instincts are trusted.
That’s what “empowering diversity in practice” means to me: making sure brilliance doesn’t have to shout to be heard.
