The first time I walked past the engineering workshop at school, it felt like passing a room that wasn’t built for people like me. Boys leaned over vices and toolboxes with an ease that made it seem inherited. I kept walking, holding my timetable like a shield, telling myself I didn’t even like engineering—when really, I didn’t know how to enter it.

I’m writing this as someone who has lived in the margins of opportunity: not always excluded by a blunt “no,” but more often by the quiet absence of a welcome sign. The Invisible Trap: Falling Between Support Systems

In my house, “future” was a practical word. It meant bills paid on time, a job that didn’t vanish overnight, a degree that led somewhere solid. My parents believed in education with the fierce faith of people who’ve had to start over. Still, I watched classmates glide toward internships or career advice sessions while I hesitated at every doorway, unsure what I was allowed to ask for.

That hesitation is how young people become statistics without realizing it. EngineeringUK describes the growing concern around NEETs—young people not in education, employment, or training—and calls for a more inclusive curriculum, better careers advice, and wider access to meaningful work experience, especially in STEM. Reading that, I felt my throat tighten. I wasn’t NEET, but I recognized the slope: the way one missed opportunity becomes two, the way uncertainty can harden into distance.

The Complication: Wanting In, Not Knowing How

My conflict wasn’t a lack of ambition. It was the constant math of risk. If I applied for a program and didn’t get in, would I have wasted time I couldn’t afford? If I asked for help, would I look naïve? If I chose engineering, would I be alone in rooms where I’d already learned to stay quiet?

The obstacles were rarely dramatic. They were administrative, cultural, and cumulative: limited work placements, unclear pathways, and the subtle message that engineering was for a certain type of student. EngineeringUK’s emphasis on diversity challenges—especially in manufacturing and transport engineering—put words to what my younger self could only feel: it isn’t just about encouraging interest, it’s about dismantling barriers that decide who gets to stay interested.

Small Turning Points, Real Momentum

One afternoon, a teacher caught me lingering outside the workshop. Instead of asking why I wasn’t inside, she asked what I was curious about. That question changed the temperature of the moment. Curiosity is gentle; it doesn’t demand you prove you belong before you begin.

I started saying yes to things I would have avoided: a STEM enrichment session, a careers talk, a short work-experience placement that taught me what “engineering” actually looks like—problem-solving in steel-toe boots and spreadsheets, in conversations that begin with “What if?” and end with prototypes.

Reflection: Inclusion Isn’t a Slogan, It’s a Structure

What I learned, slowly, is that confidence often arrives after access—not before it. When EngineeringUK highlights the role of apprenticeships in building a skilled, diverse and thriving workforce, and mentions new ideas like redirecting applicants to similar apprenticeship opportunities if their first choice doesn’t work out, I think about how many futures are lost to a single closed door. Redirection isn’t lowering standards; it’s refusing to let one outcome define someone’s potential.

The Gender Pathways Collective, working with nearly 50 organizations to create a step change in girls entering engineering and technology, also matters to me not as a headline, but as relief. It suggests I’m not imagining the imbalance. It suggests someone is building the bridge instead of blaming students for not being able to swim.

Resolution: Walking In—and Holding the Door

I finally entered that workshop. The room smelled like oil and warm metal, loud with tools and laughter. I expected to feel like an imposter; instead, I felt something steadier: ready. Not because fear disappeared, but because I understood the path didn’t have to be solitary.

Now, when I think about engineering, I don’t picture a locked room. I picture a corridor with signs, mentors, placements, and second chances—an ecosystem designed so talent doesn’t get filtered out by silence. That’s what good policy can do: turn private hope into public infrastructure. And that’s what I want to study, build, and expand—until the next student pauses by a workshop door and assumes, without question, that it will open.
