A quiet assumption in the background of most climate conversations: yes, the planet is warming—steadily, predictably—at a pace we can chart decade by decade.
Scientists tracked the rise, compared averages, debated margins, and tried to separate what was temporary from what was structural. The long-term trend was clear. The short-term bumps were familiar.

A new analysis changed how clearly we could see the underlying trend.
On March 9, 2026, researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) published a study in Geophysical Research Letters reporting something striking: a sudden acceleration in global warming since around 2015.
Instead of simply plotting raw temperature changes, the team filtered out short-term natural influences—including El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar cycles—to reduce the “noise” and isolate the long-term human-driven warming signal.
As co-author Grant Foster, a US statistics expert, put it:
“We filter out known natural influences in the observational data, so that the 'noise' is reduced, making the underlying long-term warming signal more clearly visible.”

What emerged from the cleaned data wasn’t just continued warming—it was faster warming.
The researchers reported a statistically significant speedup in the planet’s long-term warming trend beginning around 2015. Foster summarized the conclusion bluntly:
“We can now demonstrate a strong and statistically significant acceleration of global warming since around 2015.”
This isn’t a subtle reframe. It’s the same story, but more urgent: the curve isn’t merely rising—it’s steepening.
