The Lab Door With Only One Handle

The first time I realized a door could be symbolic, it wasn’t in literature class—it was in the science building. The hallway smelled like rubbing alcohol and old coffee, and the fluorescent lights made every poster about “innovation” look slightly faded. Ahead of me, a group of students clustered around a lab entrance, laughing in a shorthand I didn’t understand. I slowed down, adjusting my backpack straps, rehearsing the sentence I’d say when I stepped inside: Hi, I’m here for the research orientation.

What I didn’t rehearse was the feeling of being invisible.

Where Curiosity Meets the Gatekeeping

I’ve always loved STEM the way some people love music—instinctively, obsessively. I liked how coding could turn a blank screen into a working idea, how environmental science could make a river’s health legible through data, how engineering could translate empathy into design. I entered college convinced that if I worked hard enough, merit would speak for itself.

But STEM spaces have their own acoustics. In group projects, I noticed whose ideas were repeated and credited, and whose were met with silence. In office hours, I watched who apologized for asking questions and who treated confusion like it was temporary, not shameful. Posters celebrated famous pioneers, but few faces looked like the full world outside the building.

Later, I found language for what I’d been sensing: systemic barriers—structures that don’t announce themselves, yet quietly shape who belongs.

The Moment the Equation Didn’t Balance

My complication arrived disguised as opportunity: my first competitive lab placement. I was excited, but the excitement thinned each time I walked into that room and felt myself shrink. A lab mate joked about “diversity hires” after a department announcement. Another time, someone made a casual comment about “real engineers” versus “people who just like the vibe.” It wasn’t aimed directly at me, which somehow made it harder to confront. I began to do a strange kind of math: measuring every comment, every glance, every interruption, deciding what I could absorb without breaking.

For the first time, I considered stepping away—not because I couldn’t do the work, but because I was tired of proving I deserved to be there.

Finding Light in the Wider Conversation

One night, I read Opening doors to greater diversity in STEM from Times Higher Education, and it felt like someone had turned the hallway lights back on. The piece didn’t treat inclusion like a slogan; it mapped concrete pathways. It pointed to the reality that STEM jobs are growing rapidly, yet women still make up less than a third of STEM employees in both the US and UK. It named LGBTQ+ allyship as something actionable, not abstract. It discussed rethinking “merit,” universal design for learning, foundation years, equitable placements, and the importance of role models beyond a single famous name.

What struck me most was the refusal to frame the issue as a deficit in students. The problem wasn’t a lack of talent—it was a leaky pipeline with avoidable holes.

Small Actions, Real Shifts

I started with what I could reach. I changed how I worked in teams: I began crediting classmates by name—“That’s Maya’s idea; let’s build on it”—and I noticed how quickly credit can be redirected when someone intentionally anchors it. I sought out professors who took mentorship seriously, the ones who didn’t just answer questions but taught me how to ask better ones. I joined a campus group focused on inclusive computing, where students compared experiences without turning them into competitions of suffering.

Most importantly, I stopped interpreting discomfort as personal failure. The article helped me see that my unease was evidence—not weakness—pointing toward a system that needed redesign.

Rewriting What Belonging Looks Like

The resolution wasn’t a dramatic confrontation or a perfect ending. It was quieter: I stayed. I applied again. I spoke up once, then twice, then more. I learned to treat my presence in STEM not as a temporary permission slip but as a contribution. If STEM is an engine for innovation, then it can’t afford to run on partial fuel—excluding women, minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodivergent learners, or anyone pushed to the margins by outdated definitions of “fit.”

Now, when I picture my future—whether building climate-resilient systems, developing ethical software, or interpreting data for public good—I imagine a lab where the door has more than one handle. A place where students don’t have to calculate whether they belong, because the environment has already done the work of welcoming them.

And I want to be the kind of engineer who doesn’t just solve technical problems—who notices who is missing from the room, and redesigns it accordingly.
