The Workshop Door That Finally Opened

The first time I stepped into the school workshop, the air smelled like hot metal and sawdust, a sharp, honest scent that clung to my blazer long after the bell rang. Beyond the safety goggles and the warning signs, it felt like entering a world that had already decided who belonged—confident boys who knew the names of tools the way others knew football stats, and the rest of us hovering at the edge, hands tucked into pockets, trying not to look like we were trespassing.

I didn’t come from a family of engineers. At home, “stable career” meant medicine, law, or anything that didn’t involve grease under your nails. Still, something about how problems could become objects—how an idea could turn into a bridge, a gearbox, a prosthetic—kept tugging at me. I wanted to build things that made life easier, safer, more possible.

The Quiet Barriers No One Announces

My school talked about “STEM opportunities” the way people talk about distant weather—interesting, but not urgent. Careers advice arrived in brief assemblies with crowded slides and generic slogans. Work experience placements went first to students with family connections. When I asked about engineering routes, a well-meaning teacher suggested I “keep options open” and consider something broader.

The message wasn’t overt, but it was consistent: engineering was for a particular kind of student, and I wasn’t the default.

Even the curriculum felt like a hallway with locked doors. The pathways after 16 were described as if they were equally accessible, yet the ladders were missing rungs. I watched classmates drift away from technical subjects because they couldn’t see where those subjects led—or because the only visible route seemed designed for someone else.

Finding a Map When the Signs Are Faded

I started searching for clarity the way you search for a light switch in an unfamiliar room—palms out, moving slowly, hoping not to knock something over. That’s how I found EngineeringUK’s STEM Policy Round-Up for March 2026, which didn’t read like a motivational poster. It read like someone had finally named the obstacles I’d been bumping into.

EngineeringUK called for a more inclusive curriculum, better careers advice, and wider access to meaningful work experience, especially in STEM. They also flagged concerns that policies like foundation apprenticeships on their own may not reverse the decline in Level 2 apprenticeships—an issue that quietly narrows opportunity for students who don’t take a straight, academic route. Those lines landed with the force of recognition: my confusion wasn’t personal failure; it was partly structural. And structures, unlike self-doubt, can be redesigned.

Small Actions, Real Shifts

Once I had language for the problem, I could advocate for myself without apologizing.

I asked our careers office for specific engineering guidance—what subjects mattered, what apprenticeships existed locally, what “meaningful work experience” could look like beyond unpaid shadowing. I emailed local companies with a short pitch and a portfolio of small projects: a wobbly but functional bridge model, a coding exercise that tracked energy use, a repaired bicycle brake that I’d taken apart just to understand it.

I also joined an after-school STEM club that had recently gained more support through a new enrichment push. EngineeringUK’s update noted collaboration to make sure STEM appears in England’s enrichment framework—an acknowledgment that learning doesn’t only happen under exam conditions. In that club, I learned the power of belonging: when I struggled, it wasn’t proof I didn’t fit; it was simply part of building competence.

Seeing Myself in the Future I Want

One paragraph in the policy round-up mentioned the “urgent need to address diversity challenges in manufacturing,” and referenced work like the Gender Pathways Collective supporting girls’ entry into engineering and technology careers. That mattered more than I expected. I didn’t need engineering to be “for girls” to pursue it—but I did need the field to stop treating girls as exceptions.

I began to picture my future not as an argument I had to win, but as a contribution I could make. I want to study engineering because I’ve seen what happens when technical careers remain gated: whole communities lose access to stable, life-enhancing work, and the systems we build reflect only a narrow slice of experience.

The Door Doesn’t Open by Itself

The workshop still smells like metal and sawdust. The difference is that now I walk in like I have a reason to be there—because I do.

My challenge wasn’t only mastering equations or learning to trust my hands with tools. It was finding a pathway clear enough to follow and inclusive enough to welcome me. Through policy advocacy like EngineeringUK’s—and through my own persistence—I’ve learned that access is not a feel-good slogan. It is a design problem, and I want to be the kind of engineer who solves it.
