When a Network Becomes a North Star
I didn’t grow up thinking I belonged in STEM. I grew up thinking STEM belonged to someone else—someone louder, more certain, more “naturally gifted.” In my mind, laboratories were spotless rooms where brilliant people spoke in confident acronyms, and engineering was a world of hard hats and harder voices. I liked puzzles and patterns, sure. But I also carried quiet questions: Where are the people who look like me? Where are the girls? Where do you go when your curiosity is real, but your confidence is not?
The First Door I Didn’t Know Existed
In my community, opportunities arrived like flyers on a bulletin board—easy to miss and quickly replaced. What changed for me wasn’t one perfect mentor or one dramatic moment of genius. It was discovering that STEM can be built the way bridges are built: not by a single beam, but by a structure of supports.
That’s what I learned about the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), a national effort that connects girl-serving STEM programs with champions across schools, nonprofits, higher education, and industry. NGCP wasn’t just “another program.” It was a map of possibilities—proof that someone had noticed the gaps and decided to engineer a solution built on collaboration and equity.
The Weight of Stereotypes—and the Silence They Create
The conflict I wrestled with wasn’t simply academic. It was cultural, internal, and constant: stereotypes that hover like static in the air. Some are obvious—girls aren’t supposed to be “techy.” Some are quieter—if there are only a few seats at the table, you’d better not take up space.
NGCP names what I had only felt: that gendered socialization, norms, and expectations can become barriers, especially in tech. And it goes further, recognizing how race, ethnicity, disability, and access shape who is encouraged, who is ignored, and who is told—directly or indirectly—that STEM is not “for them.”
Finding Myself in Cybersecurity and Engineering
What pulled me in was how NGCP doesn’t treat STEM as a single hallway with one locked door. It opens multiple doors at once. I read that NGCP participates in National Science Foundation projects focused on digital forensics and cybersecurity—fields where curiosity becomes investigation, and problem-solving becomes protection. I pictured myself tracing the story hidden inside data the way a detective reads footprints.
Then I thought about engineering—civil, mechanical, environmental, biomedical—and how these careers shape the physical world we live in. NGCP emphasizes what I needed to hear: diverse perspectives don’t just improve representation; they improve innovation. When more women—especially women from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups—enter engineering, they don’t simply fill roles. They become change-makers and role models for the girls watching behind them.
The Moment the Story Shifted
The most powerful part was realizing NGCP is not only about inspiring girls; it’s about improving the programs that serve them. Its collaborative model supports “exemplary practices” and strengthens the ecosystem so more girls can be attracted and retained in STEM pathways over time. That word—retained—hit me. Because interest is fragile when you feel alone.
I began to imagine my own future differently: not as a solitary battle for belonging, but as joining a network that already exists—people who share resources, exchange strategies, and make room at the table on purpose.
Building the Bridge Forward
My conflict doesn’t disappear overnight. I still face moments where doubt creeps in, where the old narrative tries to reclaim its space. But now I have a new one: STEM is not a closed door. It’s a community you can build, link by link.
If I earn the privilege of studying STEM in college, I want to bring that same “collaborative infrastructure” mindset with me—especially in areas like cybersecurity and engineering, where the stakes are real and the perspectives in the room shape the solutions we create. NGCP reminded me that representation is not cosmetic. It’s structural. And I’m ready to be part of the structure.
