When the Lab Door Didn’t Feel Like It Was Built for Me
The first time I walked into our school’s engineering lab, the air smelled like solder and sawdust. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, and half-finished projects—wires spilling from plastic casings, a 3D printer ticking like a patient metronome—lined the tables. Everyone else seemed to know where to stand, what to touch, how to belong. I hovered near the doorway, palms damp, feeling like I had stepped into a room with an unspoken language.
That day didn’t just introduce me to machines. It introduced me to a question I’d keep returning to: Who gets handed the tools, and who has to ask for them?
The Quiet Math of Belonging
At home, my family treated education like a carefully protected flame. My parents didn’t speak about equations the way my teachers did, but they spoke about possibility with the same seriousness—bills spread across the kitchen table, a tired smile after long shifts, the steady insistence that I keep going.
At school, though, STEM sometimes felt like a private club. I noticed who got called “naturally brilliant” and who got told to “work harder.” I noticed how quickly confidence could be mistaken for competence. It wasn’t that anyone said I didn’t belong; it was subtler. It was the way my questions felt like interruptions, the way I waited for someone to validate that I wasn’t taking up too much space.
The Day My Confidence Short-Circuited
My breaking point came during a group project to build a simple sensor system. I had studied the circuit diagram the night before, tracing pathways with my finger like a map I needed to memorize to survive. But when we started assembling, my teammate reached across me and said, “I’ll do the wiring—it’s easier if someone experienced handles it.”
I let him. I told myself it didn’t matter. But as the sensor failed again and again, I felt something inside me twist: frustration at the broken circuit, yes, but more so at my own silence. I wasn’t learning engineering; I was learning how to disappear politely.
That afternoon, after the lab emptied, I stayed behind. The room sounded different when it was quiet—less like a performance, more like an invitation. I pulled out the wires and started over.
Finding a Map Beyond the Classroom
I didn’t fix everything at once. I misread resistor values. I burned my fingertip on a tool I held too confidently. Still, each mistake left a mark that felt strangely hopeful, like proof that I was finally doing the work myself.
Around that time, I found a story about programs designed to widen the doorway into STEM—efforts centered on not only sparking interest, but sustaining it through mentorship, community, and visible role models. Reading about the National Girls Collaborative Project and its focus on connecting organizations to support girls in STEM made something click: the problem wasn’t that students like me lacked curiosity. It was that curiosity needs reinforcement, especially in rooms where you feel unseen.
I started seeking that reinforcement intentionally. I joined a STEM outreach event, helped younger students build small prototypes, and watched their faces brighten when the pieces finally worked. I recognized that look—the moment frustration turns into ownership.
What I Learned About Inclusion
Inclusion, I’ve realized, isn’t a slogan or a poster on the wall. It’s the difference between being handed a screwdriver and being taught that your hands deserve to hold it. It’s the presence of someone who says, “Try it,” and means it. It’s a network that catches you before you decide that discomfort is the same as inability.
And it’s also a decision I make—again and again—to speak up. To take the wire back. To fail publicly if it means learning honestly.
Carrying the Tools Forward
By the end of the semester, my group’s sensor system worked. But the more important repair happened earlier, in that empty lab, when I chose to rebuild what I’d quietly surrendered. I began raising my hand more. I began volunteering for the parts that scared me. I began understanding that confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t—it’s something you construct, piece by piece, like a circuit.
In college, I want to study engineering in a way that expands access, not narrows it. I want to contribute to communities that make STEM feel less like a locked room and more like an open workshop—bright, messy, welcoming. Because the future isn’t built by the few who speak loudest. It’s built by everyone who is finally given the chance to try.
