The Day I Learned Collaboration Can Change a Culture
A Hallway of Posters and Quiet Numbers
The first time I noticed how homogenous STEM could feel, it wasn’t in a lab or at a coding competition—it was in a hallway lined with glossy posters celebrating “future engineers.” The faces smiled back in neat rows, confident and capable, yet strangely repetitive. I remember standing there with my backpack strap twisting under my fingers, wondering why the future looked so narrow.
Later that afternoon, I sat through a robotics club interest meeting where the room buzzed with inside jokes and familiar names. The teacher asked who had experience with programming. Hands shot up like sparks. I kept mine down, even though I’d spent nights teaching myself Python from free tutorials. In that moment, I didn’t doubt my ability—I doubted my belonging. It felt like the kind of doubt that doesn’t announce itself loudly, but settles in quietly, like dust.
When Talent Isn’t the Problem—Access Is
The challenge wasn’t a single person being unkind. It was subtler: the way confidence seemed inherited, passed along through networks I didn’t know how to enter. It was the unspoken idea that STEM was a place you arrived already fluent, already invited. I began to realize that “diversity” isn’t just a statistic—it’s the difference between a door that opens automatically for some and sticks stubbornly for others.
Around that time, I came across the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) through an industry blog from the International Society of Automation. NGCP wasn’t described as just another program; it was a convening organization—a group designed to connect girl-serving STEM initiatives with champions across community organizations, corporations, higher education, and professional networks. Reading that, I pictured a constellation: separate stars finally linked into something navigable.
A Network That Feels Like Oxygen
What pulled me in wasn’t a flashy slogan. It was the practical clarity of NGCP’s mission: maximize access to resources, share best practices and research, and use networking across programs to create a “tipping point” for gender equity in STEM. The words felt both ambitious and grounded—like someone had drawn a map instead of simply pointing at the horizon.
The details mattered. NGCP had been evaluated as “highly effective” in increasing participants’ knowledge of existing programs and resources, improving their interest in collaboration, and spreading exemplary practices—especially for girls from underrepresented groups. That phrase—exemplary practices—stuck with me. It suggested a truth I’d been circling: good intentions aren’t enough; environments must be designed to keep people in, not quietly push them out.
Even more striking was NGCP’s involvement in projects tied to real-world technologies—digital forensics, cybersecurity, and aviation-related manufacturing and technology. I imagined classrooms where a girl could learn cybersecurity not as an intimidating fortress but as a field where her perspective is needed, where her curiosity becomes a credential.
Seeing the Real “Innovation”
I used to think innovation was about building something new—faster algorithms, smarter machines. NGCP helped me see another definition: innovation as making systems fairer so more minds can contribute. Karen Peterson, NGCP’s founder and CEO, described how diversity in tech dismantles stereotypes and expands problem-solving approaches, and how NGCP has widened its equity lens to include Black, Latinx, and Native American girls in STEM, Latinx youth, and youth with disabilities in computer science.
That mattered to me because it named the invisible tension I’d felt in that hallway of posters: STEM can’t claim it’s building the future if it keeps recruiting from the same narrow slice of humanity.
What Changed in Me
The conflict didn’t resolve with a dramatic speech or a sudden trophy. It resolved more quietly—through a shift in how I interpret my own presence in STEM. I stopped thinking of myself as someone asking to be included and started thinking like someone responsible for inclusion. If STEM is a structure, then collaboration is not decoration; it’s architecture.
Now, when I walk into STEM spaces, I pay attention not only to who is there, but to what helped them arrive—and what barriers others might still face. I’ve learned that equity isn’t a favor; it’s a design principle. And like any good engineering, it requires intentional connections, tested methods, and communities that share what works.
The future doesn’t become more innovative when we demand people “fit” it. The future becomes more innovative when we make room—on purpose.
