When the Lab Door Finally Stayed Open
The first time I walked into my community college engineering lab, the room smelled like hot plastic and machine oil. A 3D printer hummed in the corner, laying down thread-thin ribbons of filament like it was quietly rewriting the future. I held my notebook the way my mother held grocery lists when we first immigrated—tight, careful, afraid of getting something wrong in a country that moved faster than our English.
I wanted to belong here. I also knew what it felt like to be the “extra” variable in the equation: an immigrant student, a woman in technical spaces, someone who learned STEM vocabulary from captions and late-night tutorials.
The Moment I Realized “Talent” Isn’t the Only Requirement
In lectures, I was fine. Numbers were honest. Code either ran or it didn’t. But in group projects, something less measurable happened. When I raised my hand, my ideas landed softly, like they had nowhere to sit. When I led, I was called “bossy.” When I hesitated, I was labeled “not ready.” I started editing myself the way you edit a sentence—removing the parts that might sound strange.
At home, my parents celebrated every A like it was a citizenship ceremony. Yet I felt a private fear: what if I could do the work, but never be seen as someone who belonged doing it?
A Small Invitation with a Big Ripple
The turning point came in an email about a campus outreach event tied to a broader movement I hadn’t known by name: improving access, belonging, and representation in STEM. The event was supported by a partner organization spotlighted by the International Society of Automation—The National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP)—which connects programs and people working to make STEM more inclusive, especially for girls and underrepresented groups.
I didn’t attend because I felt confident. I attended because I was tired.
The room was brighter than the lab—poster boards, laughter, a speaker adjusting a microphone with the casual authority of someone used to taking up space. A facilitator asked us to share a time we felt “invisible in STEM.” I watched heads nod as if my hidden thoughts had been spoken aloud by strangers. For the first time, my story didn’t feel like a personal flaw. It felt like data.
Learning to Build More Than Circuits
That semester, I volunteered at a workshop for middle school students. We taught basic automation with simple sensors—lights blinking in response to motion, tiny machines responding to human touch. I remember one girl, small hands gripping a breadboard, whispering, “I’m not good at this.”
I saw myself in her—not because her circuit was wrong, but because she assumed it was her that was wrong.
I didn’t correct her. I coached her the way I wished someone had coached me: “Let’s troubleshoot the connection, not your ability.”
When her LED finally lit up, her face changed—like a curtain lifting. It wasn’t just pride. It was permission.
What Inclusion Actually Looks Like
Inclusion isn’t a slogan on a flyer. It’s the quiet redesign of who gets to speak first. It’s mentors who pronounce your name correctly without making it a lesson. It’s teams that ask, “What do you think?” and then wait long enough for the answer.
Through NGCP’s model of collaboration—linking efforts instead of letting them compete—I began to understand that the pipeline isn’t “leaky” because students lack ambition. It leaks when people are consistently asked to prove they deserve the space before they’re allowed to learn inside it.
Carrying the Lesson Forward
By the end of the year, I didn’t become fearless; I became practiced. I started leading meetings with agendas. I invited quieter classmates into conversation. I stopped shrinking my voice to fit someone else’s comfort. And when I applied for internships, I wrote about teamwork and outreach with the same seriousness as my technical skills—because building systems includes building who gets to access them.
I still love the certainty of a correct solution. But I’ve learned the larger equation: talent matters, yes—but opportunity, belonging, and community decide whether talent gets to grow.
And now, when I walk into the lab and hear that familiar hum of machines, it no longer sounds like a closed door. It sounds like an invitation—one I intend to keep extending.
