The Collaboration Table: Finding My Place in STEM

I used to think STEM was a locked room—bright, humming with fluorescent light, and built for someone else’s key.

In high school, I loved taking things apart. I’d pry open old laptops with a butter knife, breathe in the faint metallic dust, and feel a quiet thrill when I found the problem: a loose connection, a burnt component, a missing screw. But when it came time to imagine a future—a real future with titles like “engineer” or “cybersecurity analyst”—my confidence thinned. In classrooms where the posters showed mostly male faces and the “genius” narrative was treated like oxygen, I learned to make myself smaller: ask fewer questions, apologize before speaking, laugh off my curiosity as if it were extra.

The central lesson I’m still learning is this: talent doesn’t disappear—belonging does. And when belonging is rebuilt, talent returns, stronger.

A Room Full of Voices I Didn’t Know Existed

The turning point didn’t arrive with fireworks. It came through a volunteer event hosted by a local STEM outreach group: a Saturday workshop on digital safety and beginner cybersecurity. The room smelled like dry-erase markers and warm plastic from overheated chargers. I sat near the back, shoulders tight, ready to be invisible.

During a break, a mentor mentioned the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), describing it less like a single organization and more like a bridge—connecting girl-serving STEM programs with educators, community groups, companies, and professional organizations so that girls aren’t left to navigate alone. She talked about how NGCP brings a “gender lens” to STEM efforts and helps design professional development and outreach, including work tied to cybersecurity and digital forensics. That detail stuck with me—cybersecurity. A field I’d quietly admired from afar suddenly felt as though it had an open door.

The Weight of Stereotypes—and Silence

My real complication wasn’t that I struggled with science or math. It was that I struggled with the invisible rules around them.

When you rarely see people like you framed as builders, analysts, or inventors, you begin to treat your interest like a trait you should keep private. And stereotypes don’t only come from peers; they seep from expectations, from offhand comments, from who gets called “naturally gifted.” Over time, I learned a kind of academic caution—do well, but don’t take up too much space doing it.

NGCP’s mission—supporting girls and expanding focus to include underrepresented groups such as Black, Latinx, and Native American girls, Latinx youth, and youth with disabilities—felt like someone finally naming what I sensed but couldn’t articulate: structural barriers aren’t personal failures. They’re patterns, and patterns can be redesigned.

Small Events That Changed My Trajectory

After that workshop, I leaned in. I joined a school tech club and pushed myself to speak first sometimes, even when my voice shook. I helped run a “password cracking vs. password strength” demo for freshmen, watching their eyes widen as they realized security wasn’t magic—it was choices, strategy, and persistence.

I also began looking for programs connected by networks like NGCP—spaces where collaboration wasn’t an afterthought but the point. The more I participated, the more my confidence felt less like a fragile mood and more like a skill I could practice.

What surprised me most was how quickly isolation dissolved once I found community. NGCP’s work emphasizes collaboration and sharing exemplary practices—an external evaluation even found NGCP highly effective in increasing knowledge of resources and improving programs serving girls in STEM. That effectiveness is not abstract; it looks like mentors who follow up, clubs that stop feeling like boys-only territory, and workshops where questions aren’t “interruptions” but invitations.

What I Know Now About Diversity in Tech

I used to treat diversity in tech as a moral argument. Now I see it as an innovation argument—and a human one.

When new perspectives enter a field, problem-solving changes. The questions multiply. The blind spots shrink. As NGCP’s founder Karen Peterson explains, greater diversity dismantles the stereotypes and socialization practices that hinder women’s access to tech sectors—and helps girls and women gain confidence and power to break down assumptions about who belongs.

I’ve felt that shift in my own body: shoulders less hunched, curiosity less guarded.

Carrying the Work Forward

The resolution in my story isn’t that the world suddenly became fair. It’s that I found a table where collaboration is normal—and I pulled up a chair.

In college, I want to study technology with a focus on security and systems, but I also want to help build the kind of pathways NGCP champions: networks that replace “prove you belong” with “we’ve been expecting you.” Because the future of STEM shouldn’t depend on whether a student is born with the right key.

Sometimes, all it takes is a bridge—and the courage to cross it.
