The Lab Bench and the Locked Door

I used to think STEM was a straight hallway: good grades in, good job out. But the longer I stood in that hallway, the more I noticed the doors weren’t evenly spaced—or equally unlocked. What changed my mind wasn’t a debate on social media or a slogan on a poster. It was the feeling of being in a room full of talent and realizing how many people were still waiting outside.

A Room That Looked Like the Future

Last spring, I attended an inclusion-focused STEM networking event hosted by Onvero. The venue had the soft hum of laptops waking up and the bright, nervous energy of people rehearsing introductions under their breath. Name tags flashed like tiny billboards: “Environmental Sci,” “Chemical Tech,” “Biomed,” “First-Gen.”

I remember the smell of coffee and the quiet choreography of ambition—shoulders squared, hands clasping, voices trying to sound confident. I came as a student with a growing love for research and an even larger uncertainty about whether I belonged. Around me were people who had taken winding routes: classmates who worked night shifts, international students navigating visas like extra coursework, and aspiring scientists who had been told—directly or indirectly—that STEM was for someone else.

What “Merit” Feels Like When You’re Missing Tools

The complication didn’t arrive with drama. It arrived with a casual conversation. I spoke with a student who had the same GPA as mine but no access to AP labs, no family friend in engineering, and no time for unpaid internships. They smiled while describing their schedule—classes, job, caregiving—and then said, almost apologetically, “I’m trying to keep up.”

That sentence stayed with me. “Keeping up” sounded like running a race while carrying weights no one acknowledged. I’d heard arguments that DEI efforts lower standards or take spots away from “more qualified” candidates. But standing there, I couldn’t stop thinking: What does “qualified” mean if opportunity itself has been unevenly distributed?

Low-Hanging Fruit, High Impact

Later, I read an editorial in BioScience arguing that DEI-based recruitment in STEM strengthens the economy and expands job opportunities for the US public—without sacrificing opportunities for White male candidates. It described something I had only sensed until then: that the United States often depends on foreign graduate students to keep research moving, and that DEI programs help widen the domestic pipeline by reaching underrepresented groups, including citizens and those on pathways to citizenship.

What struck me most was the phrase “low-hanging fruit”—the idea that removing institutional barriers isn’t charity; it’s strategy. In the networking room, I had met the “fruit”: capable people ready to contribute, if someone stopped pretending the ladder was equally reachable for everyone.

Learning to Measure Potential Differently

After the event, I began to track the invisible parts of my own progress: the teacher who stayed late to explain titration, the parent who could proofread my essays, the flexibility to take an unpaid research role. I didn’t feel guilty for these supports—but I felt responsible for noticing them.

I started volunteering as a peer tutor and helped organize study sessions that worked around job schedules. Small actions, maybe, but they changed how I saw leadership. Inclusion wasn’t a metaphor; it was logistical. It was timing. Transportation. Mentorship. Paid opportunities. The practical scaffolding that turns interest into expertise.

Choosing the Door I Want to Hold Open

The resolution isn’t that every barrier disappeared. It’s that I stopped accepting barriers as natural. I now see DEI not as a detour from excellence, but as a way of finding it—especially in students whose talent has been forced to hide behind exhaustion, doubt, or limited access.

In college, I want to study STEM in a way that treats opportunity like a design problem: identify constraints, test solutions, measure outcomes, and keep improving. Because if our research depends on brilliant minds, then the most scientific thing we can do is expand who gets to become one.
