A Seat at the Lab Bench

I used to think science was a perfectly level playing field—clean white coats, neat rows of pipettes, answers that rose or fell on evidence alone. That belief lasted until my first week in a research lab, when I realized how easily a person can become invisible in a room full of microscopes.

Where I Learned to Listen

The lab sat on the edge of campus like a small, humming city: centrifuges whirring, fridges clicking shut, the sharp scent of ethanol drifting through fluorescent light. I was the newest undergraduate assistant, eager enough to say “yes” to every task. My mentor, a postdoc who had moved countries twice before finding a foothold here, spoke with careful precision—her words measured, as if the air itself might misinterpret her.

On my second day, I watched her hesitate before asking a question at group meeting. No one interrupted, but the silence after she spoke was somehow heavier than interruption. It reminded me of the pause people give when they’re deciding how much attention someone deserves.

I didn’t have vocabulary for what I was witnessing—only a feeling that science wasn’t just built from hypotheses, but from human habits.

The Moment the Room Tilted

The conflict arrived quietly, the way most real ones do. A teammate joked about “strong accents” making presentations hard to follow. Another shrugged and said, “It’s just how academia is.” No one meant harm, yet the effect was harm: a small narrowing of space, a message that belonging could be conditional.

I laughed along, a thin, reflexive sound that tasted like metal in my mouth afterward. That laugh became my private complication—the uncomfortable knowledge that wanting to fit in can make you complicit in someone else’s exclusion.

Small Decisions, Larger Consequences

After that, I began noticing patterns the way I noticed data. Who got credit when an idea worked. Who was asked to “take notes” instead of lead analysis. Who was described as “confident,” and who was called “pushy” for the same tone.

So I started making small changes that felt frighteningly large. I repeated my mentor’s ideas and attributed them clearly—“As she suggested…”—so they wouldn’t vanish into the noise. I asked supervisors to rotate routine tasks so the same people weren’t always doing the invisible labor. When someone made another throwaway comment, I practiced saying, “Can we unpack that?” My voice didn’t shake as much the third time.

At first, I assumed these were personal gestures, too minor to matter. But cultures are built from minor moments stacked together, like tiles in an endless hallway. Step on enough uneven ones and you start to accept the limp as normal.

What Training Taught Me About Courage

Around then, I read about a new initiative led by the John Innes Centre and Newcastle University to create STEM EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) training—work designed not as a checkbox, but as a practical tool for shaping everyday behavior in research environments. The idea struck me with surprising relief: maybe the burden didn’t need to rest solely on individuals learning the hard way. Maybe institutions could teach what empathy looks like in real scenarios—how to mentor fairly, how to challenge bias without burning bridges, how to turn “good intentions” into consistent practice.

It also reframed my own role. I wasn’t just someone trying not to mess up. I could be someone learning how to build rooms where fewer people feel the need to shrink.

Choosing the Scientist I Want to Become

The resolution wasn’t cinematic. No one stood up and delivered the perfect speech. Instead, it came as a slow rewiring: a meeting where my mentor spoke and someone said, “Let’s follow that thread,” and the discussion deepened. A lab rota adjusted without argument. A student thanked me for naming something they’d felt but couldn’t explain.

I am applying to college because I want to study science, yes—but also because I want to study the systems around science: how teams function, how leadership shapes discovery, how inclusion influences who stays long enough to innovate. I’ve learned that fairness is not an atmosphere you hope for; it’s a practice you design.

The lab is still bright with fluorescent light, still scented with ethanol, still full of instruments that don’t care who holds them. But I care. And now, I know that caring can be trained into action—measurable, repeatable, and real.
