The Quiet Moments That Shape a Lab
The first time I understood what a microaggression was, I didn’t have the vocabulary for it. I only had the feeling—a small, sharp pinch behind the ribs—when someone in a lab meeting “joked” that my accent made protocols sound “experimental.” Laughter flickered around the room like a Bunsen flame: brief, bright, and somehow consuming. I smiled because that is what you do when you don’t want to become the lesson. Then I went back to my bench, where the centrifuge hummed steadily, indifferent to the way a comment can follow you for hours.
I used to believe science was a meritocracy made of clean data and crisp logic. Yet the longer I spent in STEM spaces—lecture halls with fluorescent lights and labs that smelled faintly of ethanol—the more I noticed a second curriculum: the unspoken rules about who gets interrupted, who gets credited, who is “too sensitive,” and who is “a good fit.” The smallest slights can be dismissed as nothing, until the “nothing” becomes a pattern that presses on belonging.
Learning the Hidden Variables
In my second year, I started volunteering as a teaching assistant for first-year practicals. I loved the small victories: a student mastering pipetting technique, the moment a confusing graph finally made sense. But I also saw how quickly doubt can be planted. A student from a marginalised background asked a question and received a sigh, an eye-roll, a “You should already know this.” The student’s shoulders sank, as if the lab coat suddenly weighed more.
I wanted to intervene. I didn’t. My silence was not cruelty; it was calculation. Who was I, still learning my place, to challenge someone senior? I walked home that day with the metallic taste of regret, replaying the scene like a failed experiment I couldn’t stop rerunning.
When Silence Becomes the Problem
The complication wasn’t a single dramatic incident; it was the accumulation. Microaggressions, as defined in the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) work now being prioritised across UK research culture, are subtle, everyday slights that send negative messages to people from marginalised groups. Their impact is not subtle at all—on wellbeing, performance, confidence, and the basic human need to feel you belong.
That’s why the announcement from the John Innes Centre (JIC) and Newcastle University caught in my throat in a good way: a new collaboration to co-create bespoke STEM-focused EDI training modules for higher education and research institutions, with an emphasis on the Equality Act, the impact of microaggressions, and practical active bystander guidance—due for rollout in Autumn 2026 (John Innes Centre, n.d.). It is supported through the UKRI EPSRC-funded EDI Hub+ Flexible Fund, with partners including the University of Essex, Quadram Institute, and Earlham Institute.
This isn’t abstract “awareness.” It is training designed for the real places where we work: the lab corridor, the shared office, the field site, the seminar room where a question can either open a door or shut it.
Choosing to Act, Not Just Notice
What moved me most was the project’s promise of co-creation—engaging researchers, technical staff, managers, EDI networks, HR, and training experts. That matters, because culture doesn’t change through posters; it changes when the people living inside the culture help redesign it.
I imagined the moment I wish I’d had: hearing a dismissive comment and knowing what to do next, not with hostility but with steadiness. Active bystander strategies don’t require grand speeches. Sometimes they look like, “Can we pause? That didn’t land well.” Or, “Let’s make sure everyone has space to finish.” Or simply checking in afterward: “I saw that—are you okay?” Small interventions, repeated, can shift the social norms that let microaggressions thrive.
A Different Future for STEM Belonging
The resolution I’m hoping for is not perfection—labs will always be full of pressure, deadlines, and human messiness. But there is a difference between a demanding environment and a diminishing one. If training can increase knowledge and confidence—as JIC’s earlier neurodiversity e-learning reportedly did at scale—then this new effort can help more of us respond with skill instead of silence (John Innes Centre, n.d.).
When I picture my future in STEM, I don’t just see instruments and publications. I see a culture where excellence and empathy are not competing hypotheses. Where the sharpest minds don’t also carry the sharpest elbows. Where students walk into a lab and feel, immediately, that they are not a guest—they are part of the work.
And if I ever hear that “experimental” joke again, I hope I’ll do what science has taught me to do: observe, name the variable, and change the conditions.
