The Lab Bench Isn’t Neutral
The first time I heard the word microaggression in a STEM setting, it didn’t arrive as a dramatic confrontation. It came wrapped in a smile, a casual joke tossed across a lab bench as fluorescent lights hummed overhead. No one raised their voice. Nothing “official” happened. But something in me shrank anyway—small enough to fit behind a centrifuge, small enough to keep pipetting as if precision could protect me.
I used to believe science was a refuge: objective, evidence-driven, insulated from the messiness of human bias. Yet over time, I learned that a research culture can be as influential as any protocol. The invisible rules—who gets interrupted, who is “naturally” assumed competent, who is expected to absorb discomfort—shape outcomes as surely as reagents do.
A New Kind of Data: Lived Experience
When I read about the John Innes Centre (JIC) and Newcastle University leading a new STEM-focused Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training project due to roll out in Autumn 2026, I felt an unexpected tightness in my chest—something between hope and recognition. Not because training is trendy, but because this one is being built differently: co-created across institutions and grounded in lived experiences across STEM disciplines, with a focus on the Equality Act, the impact of microaggressions, and practical active bystander guidance.
I pictured the partners—JIC, Newcastle, the University of Essex, Quadram Institute, and Earlham Institute—not as logos on a slide deck, but as real corridors and lab spaces where real people are trying to do good work without carrying extra weight. It matters that this effort grows from proven groundwork: JIC’s earlier neurodiversity e-learning reached hundreds, and evaluation showed substantial gains in knowledge and confidence. Evidence, at last, applied to culture.
The Complication We Don’t Like to Admit
Here is the uncomfortable truth I’ve watched play out: STEM is full of people trained to solve complex problems, yet we often freeze when the problem is social.
When a colleague makes a “harmless” comment about someone’s accent, when a student is treated as less capable because of disability, when a technician’s expertise is overlooked because their role isn’t glamorous—many of us feel a flicker of discomfort. Then we swallow it. We tell ourselves it’s not our place. We worry about overreacting. We return to our work, relieved we weren’t the target.
That silence doesn’t keep the peace. It sets the standard.
What Changes When You Teach People What to Do
What struck me most about this new training project is its practicality. “Be inclusive” is a noble slogan, but it’s not a script you can use when your heart is pounding and the room is watching. Active bystander guidance is different—it gives you choices: a question you can ask, a line you can say, a way to interrupt harm without escalating it. It turns values into actions.
And the Equality Act focus matters too, because fairness isn’t just a feeling. It’s a framework. Knowing what protection exists—and where institutions must do better—helps people who’ve been dismissed learn they were never “too sensitive.” They were paying attention.
As Professor Candy Rowe of Newcastle puts it, the goal is building safer, more inclusive research environments for colleagues and students. That phrase—safe and inclusive—sounds simple until you realize how many brilliant people have left STEM because they couldn’t find either.
The Reflection I Carry Forward
I used to treat culture like background noise: irritating, but not my responsibility. Now I see it as part of the experiment. If a lab loses talent because people are worn down by bias, it isn’t just unfair—it’s inefficient. Excellence that depends on endurance isn’t excellence; it’s survival.
This project signals something I want to believe in: that institutions can learn, scale what works, and take accountability seriously. Not through one-off workshops that fade by Monday, but through evidence-based, openly shared resources designed for the realities of STEM work.
A Quiet Resolution, With Momentum
The conflict isn’t fully resolved—not yet. A 2026 rollout won’t erase yesterday’s comments or undo years of exclusion. But it does something powerful: it makes change feel procedural, doable, and collective.
And for me, that’s the shift. The lab bench isn’t neutral—but it can be made fairer, one trained bystander, one clearer policy, one braver conversation at a time.
