When Science Gets Personal: Learning to See the Unseen in STEM

The first time I heard the phrase microaggression, it didn’t arrive like a thunderclap. It came quietly—like the fluorescent hum in a lab that you stop noticing until it suddenly goes silent. I was in a STEM corridor that smelled faintly of ethanol and burnt coffee, watching people in lanyards move with purpose, as if confidence were a required piece of PPE. I wanted to belong in that world so badly that I mistook endurance for professionalism.

In STEM, we’re trained to measure what matters. But I’ve learned that some of the most influential forces in research culture—tone, assumptions, small jokes that land like pebbles but bruise like stones—often don’t show up on any instrument panel.

A Lab Coat Doesn’t Make You Invisible

I’m the kind of person who listens carefully before speaking. In group meetings, I’d line up my thoughts like pipette tips: orderly, ready, careful not to waste anyone’s time. Yet the same pattern kept repeating. When I offered an idea, it floated for a moment and disappeared. Minutes later, the same idea returned—repackaged in someone else’s voice—then received nods like it had always been brilliant.

At first, I rationalized it. Maybe I’m not clear enough. Maybe I’m too soft-spoken. I told myself this was simply the cost of becoming “tough enough” for science. But the truth was more complicated: I was learning the hidden curriculum of belonging, where some people are presumed competent and others are asked to prove it repeatedly.

The Moment I Realized Silence Isn’t Neutral

The hardest part wasn’t a single dramatic confrontation. It was the slow accumulation of moments that felt too small to report and too sharp to forget. A comment about my accent. A “joke” about where I was really from. The subtle way a lab partner spoke over me, as if my words were background noise.

What unsettled me most was the bystanders—good people, busy people—who looked away. I became one of them too. I learned to smile at remarks that made my stomach tighten because I didn’t want to be seen as difficult. I told myself: This is just how it is.

Then I reached a point where my silence started to feel like participation.

Discovering a Different Model for STEM Culture

That’s why reading about the John Innes Centre and Newcastle University’s new STEM-focused Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) training project hit me with unexpected force. It wasn’t just another announcement dressed in corporate language. It felt like someone had finally decided to name the things we whisper about in hallways.

The initiative—supported by the UKRI EPSRC-funded EDI Hub+ Flexible Fund and launching in 2026—plans to co-create training tailored specifically for STEM research and higher education. It will focus on the Equality Act, the impact of microaggressions, and practical active bystander guidance. What stood out to me was the intent: not vague encouragement to “be nice,” but structured tools to shift norms and build shared accountability.

Even more grounding was the project’s foundation. The article described how the John Innes Centre’s earlier neurodiversity training—built through a BBSRC Connecting Cultures grant—engaged more than 600 participants, with evaluation metrics showing real increases in knowledge and confidence. That detail mattered to me. In science, evidence is respect.

What I Want to Carry Forward

I’m applying to college because I want deeper technical skill, yes—but also because I want a community where growth includes the human systems around the research. This story helped me reframe my own experiences: the problem wasn’t that I was “too sensitive.” The problem was that many STEM environments still treat inclusion as optional, rather than foundational.

If microaggressions are the invisible variables corrupting the experiment, then bystander intervention is a method—repeatable, teachable, scalable. The idea that institutions can train people to intervene safely and effectively gives me something I didn’t have before: a blueprint.

Choosing to Be Part of the Change

I can’t rewrite the moments when I stayed quiet. But I can decide what kind of scientist—and classmate—I will be next. I want to enter spaces where I don’t just succeed alone, but help widen the doorway for others: international students, neurodivergent peers, technicians, early-career researchers who deserve more than survival.

The future I want in STEM is one where brilliance isn’t rationed by identity, and where people don’t have to trade dignity for opportunity. If this new training helps turn “everyone saw it” into “someone did something,” then it isn’t just professional development.

It’s culture change—measurable, human, and long overdue.
