The Scholarship List That Felt Like a Mirror
The first time I noticed how quiet a lab can be, it wasn’t because the machines stopped humming—it was because I stopped speaking.
I was standing under harsh fluorescent lights in my community college’s science building, palms slightly damp against a pair of borrowed safety goggles. Around me, the room smelled faintly of ethanol and dry-erase markers. My lab partners chatted easily about internships and conferences, tossing around acronyms like everyone was born fluent in them. I nodded when I should, smiled when it seemed appropriate, and kept my questions folded up inside me like notes I was afraid to pass.
I told myself I didn’t belong in STEM. Not because I couldn’t do the work—but because I couldn’t see the pathway. I knew the cost of tuition down to the last dollar. I knew how many shifts I could pick up without sacrificing my grades. What I didn’t know was whether there was space in this world for someone like me: someone who loved science but flinched at the price of simply staying in the room.
Finding a Map in the Noise
At home, my desk was half study space, half survival plan. On one side sat my chemistry textbook, heavy as a promise. On the other, a growing pile of bills and a notebook where I tracked expenses with more precision than my homework deadlines.
One night, after a long shift and a long silence, I started searching for scholarships the way people search for rescue signals. The internet offered plenty of vague encouragement—“apply widely,” “believe in yourself”—but not much that felt concrete. Then I found an article listing STEM scholarships across Australia and North America, and something in me shifted. It wasn’t just the existence of funding; it was the specificity, the evidence that someone had already built a bridge and left it standing.
The list read like a quiet rebuttal to my doubt. Programs supporting women in STEM. Opportunities designed to broaden participation. Names and deadlines and directions—real handles to grab onto, not just inspirational slogans. For the first time in weeks, my chest loosened. I wasn’t imagining the obstacles. But I also wasn’t imagining the possibility.
The Part Where Doubt Gets Loud
Still, the hardest part wasn’t finding opportunities—it was believing I deserved them.
Applications asked me to “tell my story.” I stared at that phrase as if it were a trick question. My story felt too ordinary: a student commuting to campus, working late, learning equations at the edge of exhaustion. I worried admissions committees and scholarship panels wanted triumph with glossy edges, not a reality where progress looked like microwave dinners and study sessions between closing shifts.
The doubt became a kind of background radiation. It whispered that I was reaching beyond my station, that my ambitions were a costume I’d eventually be asked to remove.
But science had already taught me something important: if you want answers, you document what’s true.
Small Experiments, Real Results
So I treated the process like a series of experiments.
I made a schedule for essays the way I made schedules for labs—draft, revise, test, repeat. I asked a professor to critique my personal statement, and my voice shook when I did it. I practiced describing my curiosity not as a hobby, but as a commitment: how I stayed after class to ask why reactions behaved the way they did, how I loved the moment numbers became a story about the physical world.
I didn’t write about being fearless. I wrote about being persistent.
I submitted applications even when I felt underqualified. I learned to translate my experiences into skills—time management, resilience, attention to detail—without apologizing for where I came from. Each essay became less like pleading and more like claiming.
What I Learned About Belonging
Somewhere between deadlines and drafts, I realized my silence in the lab wasn’t a lack of ability—it was a lack of permission I kept waiting to receive.
Scholarships and inclusion initiatives didn’t just represent money. They represented an acknowledgment: the STEM pipeline leaks talent when people are forced to choose between education and survival. Seeing programs built to address that wasn’t charity—it was strategy. The future can’t be engineered from a single type of mind.
And neither, I finally understood, could my future.
Stepping Forward, Not Perfectly—But Honestly
I don’t have a neatly wrapped ending where every obstacle disappears. But I do have something steadier: momentum.
I’m still applying. Still learning. Still walking into rooms where I sometimes feel like an outlier. The difference now is that I don’t interpret discomfort as a verdict. I interpret it as evidence that I’m expanding.
When I imagine my next campus, I don’t just see lecture halls and lab benches. I see myself asking questions out loud. I see myself mentoring someone who’s standing where I once stood—quiet, capable, unsure.
And I see this truth, bright and plain: my place in STEM isn’t granted by comfort. It’s built—application by application, experiment by experiment—until belonging becomes something I can measure.
