The Program That Vanished, and the Questions It Left Behind
On the first cold morning of my spring semester, the campus coffee line curled like a question mark. I can’t control which national initiatives continue, but I can control whether I become the kind of scientist who leaves the ladder down. I can choose to mentor, to translate the hidden rules, to advocate for structures that don’t rely on individual bravery alone.
I used to think resilience meant enduring quietly, proving I could survive any environment. Now I think resilience can also mean refusing to accept that difficulty is the price of entry for certain students. Science advances by questioning assumptions. So should science education.
Carrying the Question Forward
I don’t have a neat ending—real life rarely offers one. But I do have a direction. I’m applying to college programs not just to learn mechanisms and models, but to join communities where the pursuit of discovery includes the pursuit of fairness. I want to contribute to research, yes, but also to the conditions that make research possible for more people than before.
That morning in the coffee line, the headline felt like a loss. By evening, it felt like a prompt: if support structures can disappear, then the values behind them must live somewhere sturdier than a grant cycle. I want to help build that sturdier place—one lab, one classroom, one student at a time.
