Once there was…
a world that had just staggered through a “sensational” 2025—and was staring down a 2026 that, as Power Shift Africa warns, is “on the cards to rival it on every metric.” In capitals, communities, and negotiating rooms, people could feel the pressure building: rising climate impacts, the renewable energy charge, ongoing conflicts, foreign policy, and global trade were all lining up to shape the next chapter of climate diplomacy.
Every day,
we lived inside the tension of two realities at once.
On one side, climate impacts kept escalating—heat, floods, droughts, fires—testing governments and households alike. On the other, renewables kept gaining ground, offering a credible path away from fossil fuels if policy and finance could keep pace.
Meanwhile, climate multilaterals and global deals tried to hold, even as geopolitics strained cooperation. The Paris Agreement still stood as the world’s anchor, but its strength depended on who stayed committed, who paid, and who moved fastest.
Until one day,
2026 arrived with a stack of high-stakes turning points already on the calendar—events that could reshape not just the mood of the negotiations, but the temperature trajectory of the planet.
Power Shift Africa frames 2026 as a year where major developments converge: rising impacts, renewable energy momentum, and sharpened disputes over responsibility and funding. It is not a quiet year. It is a consequence year.
Because of that,
one of the biggest shocks threatened the foundation of global coordination:
“1. US Formally Quits the Paris Agreement … This will continue this year, making 2026 a critical year for climate multilateralism.”
A US exit wouldn’t just be symbolic. It would ripple through confidence, ambition, and bargaining power—changing what other countries believe is politically possible and financially dependable. It would also raise the stakes for everyone else to prove that global climate action can endure—even when major players waver.
Because of that,
the world’s attention started clustering around two questions that refuse to go away:
1) How close are we to 1.5°C—really?
Power Shift Africa points to the threat that 2026 could be blisteringly warm:
“Global temperatures are expected to continue rising this year… the year could potentially even reach and exceed the critical 1.5°C mark. Scientists warn that this warming is driven by increased greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels.”
The UK Met Office forecast, echoed in the piece, suggests 2026 could become the fourth year over 1.4°C, with a plausible hit at 1.5°C. Whatever the exact number, the direction is unmistakable: fossil fuel emissions are still driving warming upward, and “later” is no longer a defensible timeline.
2) Who pays—and how?
The climate finance debate escalated from technical arguments into a defining political fault line:

This isn’t just a budgeting dispute. It’s a debate over fairness, responsibility, trust—and whether vulnerable countries will have the resources to adapt, rebuild, and transition without being pushed deeper into crisis.
Ever since then,
2026 stopped behaving like “another year” and started acting like a hinge in the climate story.
It’s the year where renewable energy growth must prove it can outpace emissions—not someday, but now. It’s the year where diplomatic credibility is tested—especially if the US formally exits the Paris Agreement. It’s the year where the world must decide whether “phaseout” is a slogan or a real plan—especially with landmark moments like the first Conference on Fossil Fuels Phaseout on the horizon. And it’s the year where temperature milestones—1.4°C, and potentially 1.5°C—move from abstract thresholds to lived experience.
If 2025 was sensational, 2026 may rival it not because the science changed, but because the consequences are arriving faster than the politics can comfortably absorb. The remaining question is simple—and brutal: will 2026 be remembered as the year the world argued about the “how,” or the year it finally mobilized around the “must”?
