The Day the Robot Graded My Accent
On a gray Tuesday afternoon in our public library’s tutoring room, I watched my little brother’s shoulders tense as an online worksheet flashed a message in bold red: “Try again.” The program had asked him to speak a science vocabulary word aloud—evaporation—and the microphone icon pulsed like a judge. We are negotiating systems.

Resolution: A New Definition of Merit
My brother still misfires with voice-recognition assignments sometimes, but now he rolls his eyes and tries again—because he has proof, in our little kitchen experiments and in the graphs we sketch together, that he belongs in STEM. And I have proof too.
I’m applying to college to study engineering with a focus on environmental systems, because I want to design solutions that don’t require people to erase parts of themselves to participate. I want classrooms, labs, and technologies built with the assumption that brilliance comes in many accents.
