The Room Where “Not for Me” Became “Why Not?”
The first time I heard the phrase “STEM pipeline,” I pictured something metallic and distant—like a factory chute carrying other people’s futures. In my high school, the robotics lab sat behind a glass wall near the main office. Every afternoon, the same small group gathered there, laughing over wires and code, their hands smudged with grease and confidence. I would slow down when I passed, pretending to check my phone so I could watch without being seen. I told myself I was just curious. The truth was quieter and harder: I didn’t think that room was built for someone like me.
A Doorway Framed by Doubt
At home, my parents measured stability in practical units—rent paid on time, groceries that lasted the week, a job that didn’t disappear overnight. They had crossed oceans to give me options, yet we rarely spoke about “dream careers.” In school, STEM felt like an exclusive language. People tossed around terms like “AP Physics” and “machine learning” the way others listed favorite songs. I got good grades, but I carried a low hum of uncertainty: maybe I was only “good for a girl,” or “good considering,” or good at classes that didn’t require a soldering iron.
Then a counselor forwarded an article about the National Girls Collaborative Project—an organization focused on expanding access and belonging for girls in STEM by connecting programs, educators, and role models. It didn’t promise instant genius. It promised ecosystem: networks, mentors, shared tools, and—most importantly—the idea that participation isn’t a personality trait you’re born with; it’s something the community can make possible.
I read it twice, and something in my chest shifted from envy to recognition. If there were people designing bridges into STEM, maybe I didn’t have to keep standing outside the glass.
The Moment I Almost Walked Away
Still, stepping in was different from believing I deserved to. When a teacher announced a weekend STEM workshop hosted through a local collaboration, I signed up and immediately regretted it. The morning of the event, I stood in front of my mirror tugging at my sleeves, already rehearsing how I’d leave early—how I’d claim I had homework, how I’d vanish without anyone noticing.
Inside the lab, the air smelled like hot plastic and dry-erase markers. A mentor greeted me with an easy smile and introduced herself as an engineer. Not a “woman engineer.” Just an engineer. That simplicity made me nervous. If she belonged here, what did that say about the excuses I’d been collecting?
The challenge arrived quickly: our team was asked to build a sensor that could monitor air quality—something small, real, and life-adjacent. My hands shook when I held the components. I misread the instructions, mixed up the pins, and our first test produced nothing but silence. The kind of silence that makes you feel exposed.
Learning to Stay in the Mess
I expected judgment. Instead, I got a different rhythm: troubleshoot, ask, try again. A girl beside me—confident in the way I wished I was—said, “It’s fine. Sensors are dramatic.” We laughed, and the laughter loosened my grip on perfection. I watched mentors move through the room like steady lanterns, not to rescue us, but to remind us we could rescue ourselves.
Later, one mentor spoke briefly about how organizations like the National Girls Collaborative Project amplify what works—sharing resources, partnering with communities, and helping girls see themselves in STEM through relationships, not slogans. It made me realize my biggest barrier wasn’t ability; it was isolation. Doubt grows best when you’re alone.
What Changed Wasn’t Just the Project
By the end of the day, our sensor finally produced a reading—numbers blinking on a small screen like a heartbeat. It wasn’t beautiful. The wiring looked like a tiny storm. But it worked. And when it did, I felt something unfamiliar: ownership.
I didn’t suddenly become fearless. I became willing. That felt more honest, and somehow more powerful. I started visiting the robotics lab after school—not every day, not dramatically—just often enough that the glass wall stopped feeling like a border.
Now, when I think about diversity and inclusion in STEM, I don’t picture a poster with perfect smiles. I picture a crowded table, shared tools, mentors who make room, and the courage to remain present when the first attempt fails. I used to believe STEM was a pipeline I wasn’t meant to enter. I understand now it’s a community you learn to join—one deliberate, imperfect step at a time.
