When I Stopped Being “Good at Math” and Started Belonging in STEM

I used to treat STEM like a locked lab door—something I could peer through but not enter without permission. In my high school, the robotics club met in a room that smelled like solder and confidence. The boys spoke in acronyms that clattered like tools in a drawer. I was “good at math,” the kind of compliment that sounds supportive until you realize it’s being used as a substitute for you belong here.

I didn’t want to be an exception. I wanted to be part of a community.

A Map of Who Gets to Build the Future

I grew up in a district where opportunity arrived unevenly, like sunlight through blinds. Posters celebrating scientists lined the hallway, but they rarely looked like my friends—Black, Latinx, Native, girls juggling family responsibilities, students with disabilities navigating classrooms that weren’t built with them in mind. Even when teachers encouraged us, the bigger message hummed underneath: STEM was for the already-initiated.

The first time I heard about the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), it didn’t sound like a single program. It sounded like an ecosystem—networks of community groups, universities, corporations, and professionals working together so girls wouldn’t have to fight for access alone. It made me picture a bridge built from many hands, strong enough to carry someone who’s tired of proving they deserve to cross.

The Quiet Conflict: Isolation Disguised as Independence

My challenge wasn’t a dramatic failure; it was the slow grind of isolation. In group projects, I got assigned the “organizer” role instead of the technical one. In coding workshops, I became the note-taker. I learned to smile through it, because confronting it felt like being labeled difficult.

And yet, I kept wondering: if STEM is supposed to solve human problems, why did the culture around it make so many humans feel unwelcome?

That question followed me like a shadow until I found stories of NGCP’s work—how it connects and strengthens programs that support girls and underrepresented youth, including Black, Latinx, and Native American students, and expands to include youth with disabilities in computer science. The emphasis wasn’t just recruitment. It was belonging. It was changing the conditions, not just cheering from the sidelines.

Networks, Not Spotlights: What Changed When I Found the Work

The more I learned, the more I recognized what I had been missing. NGCP doesn’t treat girls’ participation in STEM as an individual willpower test. It builds collaboration—sharing best practices, improving access to resources, and reducing the “I’m the only one here” feeling that can quietly drive students away.

I saw myself in the outcomes described: increased confidence, stronger interest, and improved attitudes toward STEM pathways. I imagined how different my robotics room would feel if the adults around it were part of a network trained to spot the subtle ways bias can reroute talent.

And it wasn’t abstract. NGCP’s reach touches the technologies shaping our lives—cybersecurity through digital forensics efforts, aviation manufacturing, IoT and IIoT technologies, and engineering. That mattered to me because cybersecurity isn’t just about code; it’s about protecting people. Engineering isn’t only structures and systems; it’s whose safety counts when decisions get made.

The Lesson I’m Carrying Forward

I used to believe that my job was to adapt—to toughen up, speak louder, blend in. NGCP helped me name a better goal: reshape the environment so more people can thrive without shrinking themselves first. Karen Peterson’s message about bringing women—especially those from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups—into fields like industrial and systems engineering resonated with me. Diverse perspectives don’t just decorate a team; they change what problems get solved and how responsibly we solve them.

I’ve started seeking spaces where collaboration isn’t accidental and inclusion isn’t an afterthought. I’ve also started practicing something braver than self-reliance: asking who else is missing from the room, and what system could bring them in.

Building the Room I Once Needed

The conflict isn’t fully gone; I still walk into STEM spaces where my presence feels evaluated. But now I see that isolation is not a personal flaw—it’s often a design problem. NGCP’s work showed me a blueprint for redesign: connect programs, share power, train mentors, and create pathways that don’t depend on a student’s ability to endure discomfort.

In college, I want to study STEM not as a gated identity but as a public good—and contribute to communities that build bridges instead of spotlights. Because the future isn’t just something we invent. It’s something we decide belongs to everyone.
