Threading Hope Into the Code
Why My Journey in STEM Is Rooted in Identity and Resilience
Growing up in a two-bedroom apartment tucked between the echoing corridors of English and another language unfamiliar to my teachers, I knew what it meant to translate—not just words, but expectations, values, and dreams. As the daughter of immigrants who left behind engineering degrees in hopes of a better life for our family, I bore witness to a contradiction: my parents, once respected professionals, were now struggling to navigate a system that didn’t recognize their brilliance.
Despite their credentials, my mother worked as a cashier, and my father managed deliveries—both invisible in the surging tide of American innovation. But in the quiet of our living room, over kitchen counters covered in schematic drawings and programming books salvaged from thrift stores, they passed on their passion for learning. By the time I was ten, I could name every major part inside our old HP desktop, even after changing out its feeble fan with trembling hands under my dad’s guidance.
The real lesson, though, came not from the hardware, but from their unwavering commitment to intellectual dignity despite systemic oversight. I learned that brilliance could be overlooked when it arrives in the wrong language. That realization became both my fire and my burden.
It wasn’t until high school that I found a space where both my heritage and my hunger to build things out of logic could coexist. I joined a STEM club at a community center recently rebranded after it lost critical DEI funding. At first, I didn’t understand why the program had been renamed from “STEM for All” to just “Smart Pathways.” But over time, I came to see it as a result of chilling policy shifts sweeping through the country—those that cast suspicion on any program designed to support kids like me.
As I coded my first real application—a website to help non-English-speaking parents navigate public school portals—I realized my project wasn’t just a line on a résumé. It was a tribute. A way to shield others from the same paralyzing isolation my parents faced during every parent-teacher conference I had to translate. Each function I wrote, each feature I debugged, gave voice to stories that policy threatened to silence.
I learned from my mentor, Ms. Alvarez, a First Robotics alum who once nearly dropped out when her scholarship disappeared overnight in the wake of a grant cancellation. She stayed anyway, working weekends at a local grocery to continue mentoring students like me. Ms. Alvarez didn’t just teach me the mechanics of code—she taught me resistance. She taught me how to imagine a future no policy could revoke.
Our final showcase was held in the back hall of the public library, near outdated encyclopedias and broken printers. And yet, it was more grand than any auditorium. That night, I presented my project in three languages, watched a community of families smile in understanding, and felt that rare lift of being seen.
What once felt like an invisible war—where diversity meant controversy instead of celebration—became a source of stubborn pride. Yes, I still code. But more importantly, I code with purpose. And as I step toward college, I do so not just armed with Python and JavaScript, but with the languages of empathy, endurance, and advocacy.
I hope to attend a university that doesn’t just ask which languages I speak but listens to the narratives threaded through them. As I pursue a future in data science—perhaps interweaving AI with public resources—I carry with me more than ambition. I carry the dreams of those whose potential went unrecognized and the responsibility to ensure our stories are encoded into the systems we build.
