Rewriting the Code: My Journey to Belong in STEM
From the moment my father handed me a rusted, half-working multimeter at the age of seven, I was captivated. The numbers flickered wildly, unreliable yet alive, and something deep inside me stirred—a hunger for order, understanding, and innovation. Yet, I didn’t realize then that in pursuing the logic of circuits and the precision of numbers, I’d also confront the tangled wires of identity, immigration, and inclusion.
The Lab and the Living Room
Our basement—cluttered with spare parts, soldering wires, and the hum of trial-and-error—became my sanctuary, equal parts laboratory and lifeboat. As immigrants from Ghana, my parents juggled odd jobs and night shifts, and I absorbed their resilience like a sponge. My mother would fold laundry while I explained Ohm’s Law to my younger brother, who nodded dutifully even if he didn’t fully grasp my mini-lectures.
Yet outside our home, where English hummed in unfamiliar idioms and peers boasted STEM-themed summer camps I could never afford, I often felt like an outsider peering through glass. I was a top student in calculus and AP chemistry, yet whenever I wore my Ghanaian kente scarf to school or spoke Twi to my aunt on the phone, I noticed the subtle shifts—the polite smiles, the averted eyes, the boxed-in labels.
The Barrier of Silence
The real test came during junior year, when I joined the National STEM Scholars’ Regional Conference. I was the only immigrant student on the panel, the only Black female among rows of predominantly well-off peers. During a coding activity, a teammate asked me if I was there on scholarship, his tone laced with well-meaning ignorance. That brief question froze me. Did he see my ideas—or only my background? I smiled then, said yes, and stayed quiet.
That night, I stared at the glow of my laptop, code strings blurring with tears. For the first time, I questioned whether I belonged in science—whether the field I loved could truly see me.
The Blueprint Forward
Everything shifted when I read about the Breaking Barriers to STEM Opportunities Act introduced by Senator Angela Alsobrooks this past winter. It wasn’t just policy to me—it was a declaration that someone in the halls of power saw what I had lived: the need for culturally relevant STEM programs, support in underserved schools, and funding that reaches the overlooked and underestimated.
Inspired, I co-founded the STEM Roots Initiative at my school, a student club aimed at mentoring middle school immigrant kids in robotics and environmental science. We hosted Saturday workshops in a local community center, using scrap Arduino kits and donated soil sensors to teach science in a way that celebrated identity, not erased it.
At our first session, a quiet sixth-grader named Perla raised her hand mid-solder and whispered: “You look like me. I want to be like you.”
Bridges and Breakthroughs
That was the moment. Not a Nobel Prize, not a patent—just a soldering iron, a child’s curiosity, and the knowledge that my journey could light someone else’s path.
Looking back, I see that my story isn't just about science. It’s about who gets to do science, who gets invited in, and how voices like mine add dimension to what’s discovered. I’ve learned that silence isn’t humility—it’s exclusion by another name. And I’ve learned to speak up.
When I enter college next fall, I’ll carry more than textbooks and proof of AP credits. I’ll carry every story, every stereotype broken, and every soldered circuit that once flickered in an immigrant girl’s hands but now powers the vision of a STEM field that welcomes all.
