The Bridges We Build: A Story of Innovation, Diversity, and Belonging
When my family and I landed at JFK International Airport nine years ago, the crisp New York winter bit through our jackets, a sharp contrast to the sun-drenched alleys of our hometown in Bangalore. In my father’s pocket was a worn-out folder of engineering blueprints, the culmination of years spent designing infrastructure in India. In my mother’s bag were jars of spice blends, her way of safeguarding a piece of home. And in my heart, young and restless, was a quiet hope and an unshakable question: How would I ever belong in this strange but magnificent new world?
Little did I know, the answer to that question lay within algorithms and equations, nestled in the intricate beauty of STEM—a world where precise calculation meets boundless creativity, and where each solution has the potential to transform lives.
A Mosaic of Possibility
Our tiny one-bedroom apartment was just a few streets away from Queens Boulevard, bustling with voices from all corners of the globe. At school, I quickly realized two things: I excelled in math and science, and I looked different—spoke different—from most of my classmates. I often stayed quiet during group discussions, fearing that my accented English and the smell of curry clinging to my lunchbox would mark me as an outsider.
In seventh grade, my world shifted. Our science teacher, Mrs. Bennett, introduced us to a project on urban sustainability, a topic close to my father’s heart, though he seldom talked about his work since struggling to find an engineering job in the U.S. I dove in, designing algorithms to optimize municipal water distribution and sketching potential applications for real-world infrastructure. When our team presented, Mrs. Bennett singled me out, saying, “This work shows a level of thinking beyond most students. Keep going.”

While STEM’s promises shone bright, its underlying structures sometimes cast shadows that I couldn’t ignore.
A memorable incident during a regional hackathon remains etched in my mind. Our team had pitched a machine-learning algorithm to predict urban pollution levels in low-income areas. Tensions during our technical run-through began to fester when one of my teammates, a boy from a more affluent background, dismissed a suggestion I made, saying, “I don’t think we need to overcomplicate things.”
That night, tangled in frustration, I returned home to my father, who was running late-night calculations for a freelance project that barely paid minimum wage. “Remember,” he said, placing his calloused hand on my shoulder, “every bridge is built with tension. You just have to keep building.” His words resonated—not just structurally but metaphorically. Tension didn’t detract from the bridge; it made it stronger.
Innovating Belonging
That hackathon team didn’t win, but the experience planted a seed. In the years that followed, I committed myself not just to excelling in STEM but to creating pathways for greater inclusion within it. I founded “Code for Equity,” an outreach initiative that organizes workshops on machine learning and Python programming for middle schoolers from immigrant families. To date, we’ve welcomed over 200 students, providing mentorship and resources that I wish I’d had during those early years feeling out of place.
Alongside my personal initiatives, I championed policy discussions at school, advocating for Advanced STEM courses to cover inventors from diverse cultures, recognizing the invaluable contributions of immigrant minds in shaping technological innovation.
Reflections on Home and Horizons
Every time I open my laptop and see the code that underpins solutions like drone-aided healthcare delivery and sustainable urban planning, I remember where I come from. My immigrant identity isn’t just an ornament to my STEM ambitions—it’s the foundation of them. I write each line of code as a bridge, not just between nodes in a network or packets of data, but between cultures, histories, and humanity’s shared future.
Belonging, I’ve learned, isn’t a static achievement. It’s a horizon—forever shifting, forever drawing us onward. And as I prepare to begin my college journey, fueled by stories of immigrant perseverance like my father’s and the determination of a little girl eager to find her place, I hold tight to one conviction: through STEM, I have the tools not only to belong but to create belonging for others.
